Students at Columbia University to Raise Thousands for Pediatric AIDS -- By Dancing

New York, NY (PRWeb) January 25, 2007 -- A recent New York Times article cited the United Nations' saying that not enough is being done to fight pediatric AIDS ("U.N. Says Global AIDS Effort for Children Falls Far Short").

This weekend, at the seventh annual Columbia University Dance Marathon, students at Columbia University plan to do their part. Columbia University Dance Marathon (CUDM) is a 28-hour dance marathon that benefits the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Students sign up to dance for 28 consecutive hours, in addition to raising a minimum of $500. Students from all undergraduate colleges and graduate schools of Columbia University are invited to dance and show support throughout the 28-hour Marathon. All together, more than 2,000 students take part in CUDM each year, representing some 75 campus groups, including student government, fraternities, sororities, residence halls, and graduate schools.

CUDM prides itself on being Columbia University's largest fundraiser, but is also known on campus as the biggest dance party of the year. This year's Steering Committee has been working for months to plan 28 hours worth of music, performances, games, food and more, to make CUDM 7 an unforgettable experience for all.

Dancers pour their hearts, souls, and bodies into CUDM. The physical difficulty of staying on one's feet for 28 hours is meant to show that doing good in the world means more than simply giving money to a cause. Dancers put themselves in a position of sympathy and solidarity with children suffering all over the world. CUDM's Overall Chair Mary Yeotsas describes CUDM as, "a celebration of the lives we have, a remembrance of the lives we've lost, and a fight for every life there is to save."

Last year, CUDM raised over $50,000 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Around the world, approximately 1,800 children are infected with HIV each day. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation creates a future of hope for children and families worldwide by working to eradicate pediatric AIDS, providing care and treatment for people with HIV/AIDS, and accelerating the discovery of new treatments for other serious and life-threatening pediatric illnesses. The Columbia University Dance Marathon is dedicated to fighting alongside the Foundation on the frontlines of this worldwide pandemic.
