Condyloma Acuminata - The Commonest Sexually Transmitted Infection
The term Condyloma Acuminata stands for Genital warts. One of the commonest sexually transmitted infections known to man, condyloma acuminata is a scourge to all those who get infected by it. The consequences of the infection are not just restricted to genital warts. Anyone who gets infected also carries the risk of developing genital cancer in the long run. There are many risk factors which ought to alert you to the risk of this infection.
Condyloma Acuminata is caused by a family of viruses. There are around forty strains of the virus which are known to cause this infection. These viruses are collectively termed as the Human Papilloma Virus family. The viruses generally spread through the sexual route, but they are known instances of transmission through oral sex and even by infected hands. Most of the infections are caused by two strains of the virus. There is a vaccine available which gives you protection against condyloma acuminata. The vaccine is called Gardasil and if you are a woman between nine and twenty six years of age, it is a wise choice to get yourself vaccinated with this.
As I mentioned before, there are some risk factors which you should be aware of. If you became sexually active at a young age, it is a risk factor for developing the infection as well as developing cervical cancer later in life. Do you have multiple sex partners? This poses a huge risk of contracting condyloma acuminata. Having sex with strangers also makes the chances of contracting this infection high. If the person you are having sex with, has a history of an STD, you have much higher chances of getting this infection.
According to statistics, the infection will show symptoms only after three months of the sexual contact. In this phase you might still transmit the infection to others without knowing it. This is why you must take precautions while having sex. Using a barrier contraceptive decreases the chances of transmitting the infection although the chances are never eliminated completely. You must also go in for treatment if you or your sex partner has condyloma acuminata. The treatment may not eliminate the virus completely, but it reduces the chances of developing cancer. Treatment also decreases the chances of spreading the infection.
Symptoms of condyloma acuminata are genital lesions, itching and discharge. You might notice warts in and around your genitals. You may see them as large fleshy masses which look like a cauliflower. In some cases you may just see gray colored bumps in the infected areas. The lesions are generally accompanied by a lot of itching and discomfort. You might have an urge to scratch the lesions and pull them out. You should not do this as the infection will only spread if you break off the warts. You might even transmit the infection with your hands in such a case. If you are pregnant and having an infection you might notice a lot of warts which bleed continuously. Otherwise, these warts are prone to bleeding when you have sexual intercourse.
